Braam obtained his B.Iur degree at the University of Pretoria and his LLB degree at the University of South Africa. He completed his articles at the firm Odendaal, Van Eeden & Du Plessis in Pretoria.

 

In 1976 he established the firm Van der Walt Attorneys as a sole proprietorship and was later joined by Frans Hugo.

 

The firm was then incorporated and thereafter since known as Van der Walt & Hugo Inc.
